Mr. Lemery

I have been the Director of Liturgical Music at Holy Spirit since 2016. I grew up in Detroit and Milford and have lived in Brighton Township for about 30 years. I live with my wife, Kathy and our cat, Eartha (Kitt). We will celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary in November.  We have three children and five grandchildren ages 13-16. At Eastern Michigan University I graduated with a master’s in Piano Performance, having studied trumpet and organ, also. During this time, I was a director of music at two churches before being hired at Holy Spirit in 1994 as the part-time music director. After two years, I joined the RCIA program and became a Catholic in 1996 (having been raised in the Lutheran Church). I was a substitute teacher as well as a private piano teacher at this time. I returned to school at Eastern, earning my Michigan Secondary Teaching Certification in General/Vocal Music Education. I had to leave Holy Spirit as I became a full-time teacher. I taught Music/Social Studies for one year for the Huron Valley Schools, and then was hired the next year by Detroit Public Schools, teaching K-8 music. I attended Wayne State University during this time and completed a Masters of Educational Leadership in hopes of becoming a Detroit Elementary School assistant principal. Unfortunately, after teaching music for about 13 years, I was laid off so I became a substitute teacher and part-time pianist/organist/choir director (on Saturdays!) at St. Mary’s in Pinckney for four years.  Fortunately, Holy Spirit was in need of an organist/piano accompanist in 2015, so I again was blessed to be back at Holy Spirit. After a year, the full-time Director of Liturgical Music position opened up. I applied for the position and, thankfully, was hired! The Children’s Choir began in the Fall of 2016 and has grown to include the younger choir in 2019. I’m looking forward to a Spirit-filled and exciting year as we bring back our choirs and can again praise God with our choirs. Email Mr. Lemery at lemery@holyspiritrcs.org.
