Grades 1 & 2 Curriculum

English Language Arts

Textbook: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: National Journeys

First and Second Grade

Students will work on phonics, reading strategies, and writing skills.  They will be exposed to a variety of genres including poetry, biographies, and informational text.  Students will transition from learning to read to reading to learn.   They will progress from writing one paragraph papers to writing a three- paragraph paper. Phonics instruction will include, but is not limited to a review of consonant letters and short vowel sounds, long vowels, vowel teams, consonant clusters and digraphs, the schwa sound, and r-controlled vowels.

Science

Students will learn through an online program, Mystery Science.  They will learn about animals, lights and sounds, and our solar system.

Math

Textbook: Sadler- Oxford: Progress in Mathematics

First Grade Math: 

Students will focus on place value through one hundred, addition, and subtraction.  They will begin with basic addition and subtraction facts, and will progress to two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.  They will also learn about measurement, geometry, money and time, as well as fractions.

Second Grade Math:

Students will focus on place value through one thousand, addition, subtraction, and the beginning concepts of multiplication and division.  They will progress through three-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.  They will also learn about measurement, geometry, money and time, as well as fractions.

Religion

Textbook: Spirit of Truth, School Edition

First and Second Grade

Students will be preparing to make their Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Holy Communion by their second-grade year.  In addition to this special preparation, students will also be learning about the story of Christ’s birth, our blessed Mother, and many saints.  They will be listening to stories from the Bible on a regular basis and will progress to learning how to locate scripture.  Students will also focus on a particular virtue and saint each month as part of our school-wide program.

Social Studies

Students will learn through about social studies through articles provided by Studies Weekly, as well as some online components.  They will learn about communities.  They will also learn about government, goods and services, and map skills.
